For as long as she can remember, Jamila has been a “radio kid”. It was always on during her childhood in Brussels, and she absorbed everything – the pop, the soul, the variété, even the ads – almost instinctively.
And at her gigs you can tell.
When she talks, she references hit songs – all the time. And she laughs – a lot.
What she didn’t get from the radio, she got from her big brother, who brought home vinyl records by the Jackson 5, The Temptations and later the New Wave pop hits of the 80s/90s.
It all comes together in her shows, which are a non-stop celebration of big feelgood songs from the period. The uplifting hits. The irresistibles.
“It’s about fun, dancing, joy, sharing,” she says simply. Although she came relatively late to performing, she plunged in totally, working on her own projects, lending her voice to other artists, singing in the streets and in concerts – just about anywhere people come together.
“We do it seriously – we try everything. And people come to music, like bees to a flower,” she says with a laugh. “It’s a celebration.”
